book bound

I just didn't feel like working in my journal today,
but I did feel like making something.
I love being able to take a few sheets of paper, some string and a needle,
and not long later having a book to hold in my hands.
In terms of art, it's practically instant gratification!

The covers are made from paste papers I did a when I was teaching a mixed media class. For those of you that don't know what paste papers are, it's basically finger painting for adults - a whole lot of fun! I collaged in paper torn from an old book and some joss papers. A couple of sites with recipes and instructions can be found here and here.

Not the best of photos, with bad lighting, but you get the idea.

The book is 6"x6", waxed linen stitched...

February 20

I have found myself fascinated by an article I read in the NY Times, from Thursday's paper, about a performance artist who spent a year within a cage.  365 days behind bars, in self imposed confinement, with no toilet (but some good friends!), for the sake of art.  Here is the article:A Year in a Cage: A Life Shrunk to Expand Art

I wondered to myself if there is any way, or any thing, that I felt so passionate about that I would be able to do this.  I don't think so.  I have felt confined the past few months, not by choice (though in reality is was a choice to have surgery), and compared to a cage I have luxury - being able to walk freely from one room to another...

Then I got to thinking about the self imposed cages we all create for ourselves, at one time or another in our lives.  Haven't you? even though we are walking around freely - we still manage to find ways to hold ourselves back, confine our truth, cage our spirits...
Tehching Hsieh (pronounced dur-ching shay) has definitely got me thinking, which makes me love his art, and want to see his work, which is on display at MoMA through May 8th.

Remember my pepper plant?  If not, click here to get the scoop on it from my previous post.
Anyway, for those that know the story, here are some updated photos of it's progress!
There were several new flower buds a couple weeks ago, but they dropped -
guess it needed the energy for this little guy, turning it's golden yellow, readying for munching.
Note the baby plants from my last harvested pepper, and it's seeds.
The mamma plant is now a year and a half old :)

Drum roll please. . .

Happy Valentine's Day one and all!!

I had intended to do the drawing bright and early this morning,
only to discover my camera batteries were dead!
So, without further ado...

it's time for me to pick the winner of my 6 month blogging celebration give away.
Forty of you, my blogging friends, joined in...
and the winner is...

Sonia, the wonderful mixed media artist from Atelier Curio Studio!!
If you watch the video and see her name being drawn, you'll realize I had no clue my little digital camera also recorded sound!  So, I'm doing everything pretty quietly, except for one blast of laughter for my klutzy one handed attempt at filling my bag with all your names.
I always enjoy entertaining myself :^)

This is Zana adding her happy valentine wishes, too!
